Leder Games Awards Root Roleplaying Game License to Magpie Games
October 26, 2018

Root RPG Kickstarter scheduled for mid-2019, followed by full retail release in early 2020

Magpie Games has reached a multi-year licensing agreement with Leder Games to produce a tabletop roleplaying game set in the world of Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right.

“I will always treasure roleplaying as the formative experience for me in gaming,” says Patrick Leder, owner and creative director of Leder Games. “Root is one of my favorite games, and I am delighted Leder Games will be working with Magpie to bring Root to the roleplaying world.”

Root is an asymmetric game of war and adventure in which multiple factions battle for control of a vast woodland. Caught between the invading Marquise de Cat and the established aristocracy of The Eyrie Dynasties, the Woodland Alliance plots revolution, while the Vagabonds of the forest seek fame and fortune for themselves. Root is designed by Cole Wehrle (Pax Pamir, An Infamous Traffic, and John Company) and brought to life by master illustrator Kyle Ferrin (The Vast series, Stitches).

“From the moment we sat down to play Root at Gen Con, we wanted to see more of the woodland,” says Mark Diaz Truman, CEO of Magpie Games. “All of us at Magpie Games love tense, political fiction, and Root immediately stood out as an amazing example of just how emotionally compelling a board game can be. We’re so grateful Leder Games has given us a chance to bring the woodland of Root to roleplaying!”

In the Root RPG, players will take on the role of Vagabonds, adventurers who have come to the woodland seeking riches and adventure. The factions of the forest, however, see the Vagabonds as potential allies against their enemies—or as threats who must be contained or destroyed. Will they join with those who would rule the forest? Or will the Vagabonds pursue fame and fortune on their own terms?

Magpie Games has scheduled a mid-2019 Kickstarter for the Root RPG Core Rulebook, with plans to release the game and further supplements into retail in early 2020. For more information about the game, fans can register for updates and announcements at www.rootrpg.com or sign up below.

For fans of Root who will be attending Metatopia 2018 in Morristown, NJ, Magpie designer Brendan Conway will be on hand to run early demos for the Root RPG. Stay tuned for more info as this project develops!
